A day ahead of the 62nd Republic Day celebrations, police have made exhaustive security arrangements, as a precautionary measure in South Tamil Nadu.
Intelligence sources today said security measures had been beefed up in and around the Nuclear Power Plant at Koodankulam and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at Mahendragiri near Kalakkad in Tirunelveli district.
Besides, all the historic temples like Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai, Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram, Lord Dhandayuthapani Temple atop Palani Hill, Arulmigu Nellaiyappar Temple in Tirunelveli, Lord Karpaga Vinayagar Temple at Pillaiyarpatti, Sri Rangamannar Temple also popularly called as Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur and Kumari Amman Temple at Kanyakumari were under security scanner.
Pamban Railway Bridge, an engineering marvel connecting Rameswaram Island with the main land, was also brought under security scanner by the police. Officials of various agencies, including Special Intelligence Cell, were involved in the security arrangements.
Similarly, a comprehensive security cover was in place in the Indian Territorial Waters along the entire South-Eastern coast supported by air and sea surveillance by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG), besides coastal patrolling by the Tamil Nadu Marine Police to thwart any kind of intrusion of terrorists via sea route.
